The
History of Heywood Holiday Cottages Ashe Cottage was
once part of the estate of Heywood House, a country mansion just half a mile
away. During the 17th Century the whole region began to develop as a
manufacturing centre for textiles, particularly wool, and in 1645 the whole
estate was bought by the wealthy clothier John Ashe. He re-employed all the
farm workers as spinners and weavers, working from their own homes. Ashe
cottage was one of these workers cottages and it is named after John Ashe.
Heywood House is now the headquarters of the
National Trust, an
organisation which acquires important buildings, works of art and even whole
villages so that they may be preserved for future generations.
Orchard
Cottage was converted from old workshops and is just a few metres down the
garden. Orchard Cottage is detached and has it's own facilities including a
beautiful rustic living/dining/kitchenette area with oak beams and ceilings and
it's own log fire. The main dining room in Ashe Cottage will seat 15. There are
five bedrooms in the main house and a further 3 in Orchard Cottage providing 14
adult bed places and one smaller child's single. The Ashe/Orchard combination
is the perfect venue for large groups and multi-family holidays
